We asked stakeholders for their views on our new draft strategic plan.
Thank you for all your feedback. We have considered all the comments we recieved and this has helped us to finalise the plan.
On 1 April 2020 our new strategic plan came into force.
Our ‘Fit for the future’ strategy for 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2025 describes what we plan to do over the next five years to achieve our vision of being recognised for delivering world-class regulation and excellent customer service.
2020 has proven to be an unprecedented time for the optical professions and we did not anticipate that our strategic plan would be published during such extraordinary circumstances.
COVID-19 has impacted the way we currently regulate and will no doubt impact the future of the optical professions and in turn, our strategic plan. Therefore, as we continue to monitor the situation, we will revisit this plan after one year.
The three main strategic objectives for the next five years are:
The General Optical Council is the regulator for the optical professions in the UK. Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting high standards of education, performance and conduct amongst opticians. This consultation seeks stakeholder views on our draft strategic plan, which describes what we plan to do over the next six years from April 2020.
In developing our draft strategic plan, we have consulted and taken on board feedback from GOC staff, the GOC Council and advisory committees. We would now like to hear your views on the draft plan to help us finalise it.
We encourage you to read the whole draft strategic plan first before answering the questions. It would be helpful for us to hear your views on all the questions, but you are free to respond to as many or as few as you choose. The consultation questions focus on the following areas:

The consultation will run from Tuesday 17 December 2019 to Friday 17 January 2020. We will aim to publish the final strategic plan in March 2020.
The feedback provided by our stakeholders as part of this consultation survey will be analysed and as a result, the guidance may be clarified, amended or expanded. We will publish the main areas of feedback, as well as how we have used it, on the "We Asked, You Said, We Did" area of the GOC consultation hub.
